A successful interim evaluation of the EmmaCOPD project

In order to reduce the number of exacerbations with 25%, the project EmmaCOPD was started in the Bravis Hospital in Roosendaal and Bergen op Zoom. Oscar van Dijk of Medicine Men talked to patients and caregivers in order to further improve EmmaCOPD.

Patients with severe COPD are hospitalized multiple times a year. In order to reduce the number of exacerbations with 25%, the project EmmaCOPD was started. The patient can see if he has moved enough during the day on a smartwatch. If the patient does not or is not capable to move enough, Emma will warn the caretaker and if necessary will warn the pulmonary department of the hospital. In this way there can be actively intervened even before an exacerbation takes place.

On the 22th of January Oscar van Dijk of Medicine Men talked to four patients and two caretakers from the EmmaCOPD project. The patients are very content with EmmaCOPD and don’t want to go without it anymore. It gives them more insight in their behavior and having someone check up on them gives them a sense of security. The patients indicate that they would like health professionals, such as the general practitioner and the physiotherapist, to do more with their data. Research shows that 94% of the patients is content and 52% gives EmmaCOPD a grade of 8 or higher.

Scientific research with 40 new COPD patients in the Bravis hospital will start soon.
